Favorite Memories of SMHS
There are so many. It was a special place to grow up.
Final career highlights since the last SMHS reunion
I had the privilege of working on two Smithsonian Folklife Festivals including the Silk Road Festival with YoYo Ma’s Silk Road Orchestra. For the latter I produced The Paper Garden with papermakers from Japan, Xian, Khotan, and Venice collaborating with American paper artists. It was a dream experience, including the travel to select the artists.
My husband became ill. I closed my non-profit and its last project, Paper Road/Tibet. After his death, I moved to New Mexico. I spent six fascinating years on the Board of The Mountain Institute, an international NGO working in environmental and cultural preservation of mountain communities and mountain environments.
Friends introduced me to widower Andy Johnson. We both love skiing, hiking, cooking, and supporting the arts. I bought land next to his in Taos and we are in the process of creating the Johnson-Farmer compound.
In the past year and a half my daughter has had my first grandchild, Nathan. They live on Long Island where she is a professor at Hofstra University, so now we commute frequently. [Andy has 11 grandchildren, so Nathan makes a dozen!] My son married fellow international mountain guide Margaret Wheeler last October. They live and work in Chamonix and the Seattle area.
I am inspired by all of the life stories in the eTitanian. Many thanks to the team who worked so hard to make the reunion happen.
Grandson Nathan, and the celebration of Jane’s son’s wedding.
